Pride

To this day I remember my first tool, it was a pair of pliers given to me by my father. That was almost forty years ago and I still use those pliers to this day. Growing up tools have always been a fascination for me whether it is an old Stanley hand plane or a brand new twenty inch joiner, something about them has kept me captivated always looking for that one rare piece, or running out to see the latest piece of equipment.

Having a respect and a appreciation for tools as you get older turns into pride, and pride turns into a little bit of bragging. " Check out the new ???? I just bought " Or me last night on Periscope I had to show off a new awl I just received. And I guess for me this was the reason I decided to do a remodel of my tool cabinet, pride. I have always enjoyed the exterior of this cabinet, kind of a period feel to it and I have always liked that about it. But I have never really been happy with the interior of it or the lack of ability to organize my tools in it. Tool cabinets have long amazed me from ones as beautiful as Wohn Geist and as intricate as H.O. Studley, not to forget about the English chest of Benjamin Seaton's but this is a list that I could go on with for awhile. My point is there is certainly a lot of influence from some really amazing craftsmen with in the rebuilding of my cabinet. And honestly I would be a fool not to try and learn from their work, after all if I was building a rocking chair I'm pretty sure I would be studying the craftsmanship of Sam Maloof as many woodworkers already have.

When I first set out with the idea of this redesign I had but a few things in my mind. First organization, I really wanted to take the cabinet down to only the tools I actually use on a regular basis and organizing them with in the cabinet in a very useful manner. Second was appearance, I wanted the interior of the cabinet to accent the exterior of the cabinet and together create something beautiful, something to have pride in that would bring about that ability to brag like a new tool always does. This has been a project of a lot of thought and planning, now two weeks into it and I am very happy with the way it is coming together. I am in no rush to finish this anytime soon, it's my personal labor of love that one day I will complete. Until then I have a lot of inlay work, accents and tool holders to design and build for it and in it. But the pride that I feel from this cabinet grows with each new piece I add to this ever growing puzzle I call my tool cabinet, and with that pride comes the realization that with time and effort anything you build can be awesome you just have to take your time and apply the effort.
